James’s Street Steel Ltd is aiming to keep business booming from its base in Rathcoole, County Dublin, as the construction sector handles a shift toward a more competitive market. Operating out of Greenogue Business Park, the family-run company has positioned itself as Ireland’s premier rebar fabricator and one of the largest suppliers of reinforcement materials in the country. Managing Director Sean Kavanagh said the firm is actively working to maintain its momentum despite recent challenges in the industry.
The business was established in 1974 by Sean’s parents, Joe Snr and Maureen Kavanagh, and has grown into a specialist manufacturer of rebar cut and bend services. Today, the operation employs 45 direct staff and maintains a stock of over 15,000 tonnes of rebar and coil, along with 3,000 tonnes of mesh. The facility serves as a critical hub for the construction industry, providing essential materials for a wide range of projects across the Dublin region.
Sean Kavanagh and his wife Jolanta, who serves as Head of Transport and Production, lead the company with a focus on local presence and hands-on management. This family-driven approach is complemented by rigorous compliance standards, as Jolanta oversees adherence to multiple ISO certifications covering quality control, environmental management, and sustainability. The company prides itself on meeting regulatory requirements while keeping delivery times efficient, having reduced lead times for orders from five days to three.
Despite the current economic climate, demand for residential construction remains strong, driving much of the company’s current workload. Sean noted that while the market has become slightly more competitive compared to the boom years, the volume of work is significant. “The last couple of years business has been very good,” he said. “Towards the end of last year and into this year, it’s getting a little more competitive. There’s not as much as there was back in 2019.”
Diverse projects across the capital
The company supports a diverse portfolio of high-profile clients, including Walls, Liffey Contracts, Murphy International, Collen Construction, GEM Group, and Townlink. Recent work includes residential developments in Dunshaughlin and Newtown Mount Kennedy, commercial projects in Ballymount and at Dublin Airport, and infrastructure work related to the Dublin Port Bert Project. The firm also plays a key role in healthcare projects, supplying materials for the Mater, Beaumont, and Symbol Hospitals.
Managing Director Sean Kavanagh said the mix of residential and industrial work provides stability. He noted that residential demand is currently high, but industrial infrastructure is necessary to support that growth. “It’s mostly residential, but you need the industrial infrastructure and that stuff to go with it,” he explained. “But, at the minute, it’s only residential, which there’s a huge demand for.”

The firm is currently booked up for the remainder of the year, with Sean expressing satisfaction with the workload ahead. “We’re booked up for the remainder of the year alright. It’s not hectic, but for me, I’m happy enough with what we have on our plate. I think the year will be good,” he said.
